    The Air Force wrestling team heads to Orem, Utah, this Saturday, March 8, for the 2014 NCAA West Regional/Western Wrestling Conference Championships, hosted by Utah Valley. The action is slated to begin at noon, with finals starting at 6:00 p.m.

    ABOUT THE NCAA WEST REGIONAL...
    The NCAA West Regional, comprised of the six members of the Western Wrestling Conference (Air Force, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming), serves as a qualifying tournament for the NCAA Championships, which will be held March 20-22 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

    This year, the West Regional will receive 15 automatic qualifiers, based on the final Coaches' Panel Ranking, Rating Percentage Index (RPI) and Division I winning percentage. The breakdown of the 15 automatic bids per weight class for the West Regional is as follows: 125 (2), 133 (1), 141 (1), 149 (1), 157 (2), 165 (3), 174 (1), 184 (2), 197 (1) and 285 (1).

    After all of the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 12.

    LAST YEAR AT THE NCAA WEST REGIONAL...
    In 2013, Wyoming captured its fourth-straight regional title, scoring 79.0 points to finish ahead of second-place North Dakota State (76.0).

    Wyoming finished with four regional champions, while North Dakota State, Utah Valley and Air Force each brought home a pair of regional titles. Utah Valley claimed third place in the team standings with 70.0 points, while Air Force, led by titles from sophomore Dylan Hyder (133) and junior Josh Kreimier (157), registered 63.5 points. South Dakota State rounded out the team scoring with 16.5 points.

    LAST TIME OUT...
    The Falcons went captured a 26-16 victory over Northern Colorado in its final dual of the season on Feb. 23. Freshman Natrelle Demison (149) and sophomore Konner Witt (174) each scored falls to lead the Falcons, while senior Greg Rinker (133) added a technical fall. Also picking up wins for Air Force were freshman David Walker (141) and seniors Devin Hightower (184) and Greg Isley (197), who all registered decisions.

    SCOUTING THE FALCONS...
    Air Force finished the regular season with an 11-6 dual mark and 2-3 ledger in the Western Wrestling Conference, to tie for fourth place in the league standings. Leading the way for the Falcons is sophomore Josh Martinez, currently ranked fifth in the nation at 125 pounds with a 31-2 overall record.

    SCOUTING THE BISON...
    North Dakota State, ranked 22nd in the final coaches poll of the season, tied for first in the WWC standings, finishing its dual slate with an 11-7 overall record and 4-1 mark in conference action.

    The Bison have three nationally ranked wrestlers, led by senior Steven Monk, who is currently ranked third in the nation at 165 pounds. Meanwhile, sophomores Hayden Zillmer (174) and Kurtis Julson (184) are ranked 12th and 20th in their respective weight classes by InterMat. Additionally, Tyler Lehmann (197) was listed 30th in the final coaches' panel rankings of the season.

    SCOUTING THE BEARS...
    Northern Colorado finished sixth in the WWC regular-season standings, posting a 5-13 overall dual mark and 0-5 conference record. Leading the way for the Bears are heavyweight Henry Chirino, who was listed in the final coaches' panel rankings of the season, and Trey Andrews (125) and Mitchell Polkowske (157), who were both rated in the top 33 of the final RPI.

    SCOUTING THE JACKRABBITS...
    South Dakota State finished third in the WWC regular-season standings with a 6-8 overall dual record and 3-2 ledger in conference action. The Jacks are led by junior Cody Pack, who is ranked 16th in the nation at 157 pounds with a 26-6 record on the season. Meanwhile, three other South Dakota State wrestlers--Alex Kocer (149), Joe Brewster (165) and John Nething II (174)--were all rated in the final coaches' panel rankings of the season.

    SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES...
    Utah Valley finished the regular season with a 6-9 overall dual ledger and 2-3 record in WWC action, tying for fourth in the conference standings.

    Leading the Wolverines is junior heavyweight Adam Fager, who is rated 12th in the nation by InterMat. Meanwhile, Avery Garner is rated 30th at 141 pounds in the final coaches' panel rankings of the season.

    SCOUTING THE COWBOYS...
    Wyoming, receiving votes in the final coaches poll of the season, tied for first in the regular-season WWC standings with a 6-6 overall record and 4-1 mark in conference action. The Cowboys claimed the conference's regular season title by virtue of a tiebreaker.

    The Cowboys have two wrestlers who are currently ranked by InterMat, led by junior Tyler Cox, who is rated eighth in the nation at 125 pounds. Meanwhile, freshman Ben Stroh is ranked 17th in the nation at 184 pounds.

    IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS...
    Sophomore Josh Martinez is currently ranked by several different wrestling publications this season, rating fifth at 125 pounds by InterMat. He is also ranked fourth by The Open Mat, W.I.N. Magazine and DI College Wrestling, and fifth by WrestlingReport.com.

    NCAA RANKINGS...
    Air Force sophomore Josh Martinez was rated fourth at 125 pounds in the final coaches' panel rankings and Rating Percentage Index (RPI) for the 2013-14 wrestling season, The final rankings and RPI are two of the tools (along with winning percentage) used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

    Qualifiers from this weekend's NCAA West Regional will compete at the NCAA Championships, being held in Oklahoma City, Okla., March 20-22.
