Irving, Texas – A program-high 12 Falcons help make up a group of 88 student-athletes that have been named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling Team. Eight Falcons were added to the first team while four were named to the second.
The honor marks team captain, Zen Ikehara’s, second time making the first-team and Anthony McLaughlin’s second time making the second-team. Marcus Amico, Alec Opsal and Garrett O’Shea are the first Falcon sophomores to be added to the Academic All-Big 12 teams. In Air Force’s first year in the Big 12 Conference, six Falcons earned the honor, while eight Falcons earned the honor in 2017.
The team features 19 student-athletes from Conference member institutions Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and West Virginia, while student-athletes from the league’s affiliate members in the sport - Air Force, Fresno State, Northern Colorado, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming - total 68 selections.
Sixty-three student-athletes, including Hank Swalla (Iowa State) and Matt Findlay (Utah Valley) with a 4.00 grade point averages, made the first team while 25 selections make up the second team.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
