Wrestling Team Grabs Second Place at Tournament
GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Air Force wrestling team continued its successful season at the Jack Hancock Invitational, capturing second place overall. The Falcons, who scored 128 points, were barely surpassed by Oklahoma, who
finished with 138.5 points. Five Air Force wrestlers grabbed first-place honors at their individual weight classes.
"We wrestled very well," said head coach Wayne Baughman. "Against some tough competition, we had twelve wrestlers place in the tournament, including five first-place winners." T.J. Huxel (157 lbs.) won his second consecutive tournament, winning an 8-7 decision over Oklahoma's Brian Burrows in the championship match. Alex Pelbath defeated teammate and fellow co-captain Scott Jenkins 4-2 in the championship bout of the 165-pound weight class. Kevin Hoy (Hwt) got a measure of revenge over Oklahoma's Leonce Ponce, defeating the heavyweight 3-2 to win first-place honors. Ponce had defeated Hoy earlier in the season in the championship match at the Oklahoma Open. Ryan Montanez (141 lbs.) and Terry Parham (174 lbs.) also won championship matches to bring home first-place trophies. Placing second were Scott Frohardt (149 lbs.), Scott Jenkins (165 lbs.) and Samuel Sherertz (184 lbs.). Heath McKim (125 lbs.), Andrew Peters (133 lbs.) and Chris Bennett (141 lbs.) each grabbed third-place honors, while Ryan Kaiser (185 lbs.) was a fourth-place winner. The Falcons (4-1 duals) will look to defend its title this weekend at the All-Academy Championships. The annual tournament will be Saturday, Feb. 3. Army will host this year's event.
