Falcons Down Western State, 29-14

    Gunnison, Colo. -
A major decision by junior Brenden McLean (Grants Pass, Ore.) at 197 pounds clinched the Falcon victory, as the Air Force wrestling team downed Western State, 29-14, Thursday evening. The win moves the Falcons to 3-3 on the season, while the Mountaineers, ranked 15th at the Division II level, fall to 4-2-1.
The meet began at the 125-pound weight class where Western State's Marques Bravo notched a 9-4 decision over Zachary Valdez (Fr., Parker, Colo.) to put the Mountaineers up 3-0. However, the Falcons scored the next 10 points, as junior Matt Benza (Tamaqua, Pa.) recorded a fall over Jonah Stewart in a time of 2:15 at 133 pounds, while sophomore Matt Crippes scored a 15-2 major decision against Nate Wiggins in the 141-pound bout.
The momentum swung back in the Mountaineers' favor at 149, as Air Force senior co-captain Josh Peterson (Comstock, Wis.) dropped a 6-4 decision to Camille DuPont. Western State regained its lead when 157-pounder Zach Lee registered a 17-1 tech fall over Air Force freshman Anthony Dorward (Seattle, Wash.), putting the Mountaineers up 11-10.
The Falcons received five valuable team points from junior Beau Tresemer at 165 pounds. The Norman, Okla., native, who has now won nine of his last 10 matches, notched a 17-2 tech fall over Dan Roesch to give Air Force a 15-11 lead. Matt Trout then gave Western State the victory at 174 pounds, recording a 3-2 decision over senior co-captain Jacob Lillich (Jay, Okla.).
Air Force's last senior captain, Luke Lefever (La Crosse, Wis.) put the Falcons up 19-14 with his 10-8 major decision over Dillon Waggoner. With a chance to clinch Air Force's third dual victory of the season, Brenden McLean captured a 10-2 major decision against Cody Mumma. The victory was the junior's ninth-straight, as he remains undefeated in dual action, and made it impossible for Western State to win the dual.
Just for good measure, Brenden's younger brother, Trey McLean (Grants Pass, Ore.) notched a fall against George Coleman, pinning Western State's heavyweight in a time of 2:22 as the six-point bout upped the Falcons' final advantage to 29-14.
The Falcons return home on Saturday, Jan. 29, for a dual meet versus South Dakota State. The contest is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. in Cadet East Gym.
