Air Force Academy

The dual pitted the champion and runner-up of the 2001 Colorado Collegiate Championships held last week. Air Force won the tournament over second-place Western State.

In the first match of the evening, Air Force's Samuel Sherertz recorded a first-period pin against WSC's Dirk Sisneros at 184 pounds. Western State got on the board in the next match as 197-pounder Jeff Mueller scored the lone point of the match in the third period. Kevin Hoy extended Air Force's lead to 11-3 by defeating Tyler Ainsworth 17-2 for a technical fall at heavyweight. Hoy scored 10 of his points in the second period.

Western's Anthony Guillen won his seventh consecutive match by stopping Heath McKim 2-0 in the 125-pound bout. The first half ended with a strong effort from Mountaineer captain Fred McCathron at 133 pounds. McCathron scored a third-period fall against Andy Peters, giving Western State a 15-11 lead at intermission.

Western's Zac Stratton improved his record to 14-3 on the season and extended WSC's advantage with a 5-2 win over Ryan Montanez. However, the Falcons gained the momentum as Scott Frohardt outpointed WSC's Adrian Jiron 10-4 at 149 pounds. TJ Huxel gave Air Force the lead at 18-15 as he scored a major decision over Cleveland Holmes. Alex Pelbath won his match over Dave Vondy 7-4 in the 165-pound bout to assure Air Force of no worse than a draw.

Terry Parham delivered Air Force its final margin of victory by defeating WSC's Steve Sisler by fall.
