Falcons Down Portland State, 40-6
USAFA, Colo. -
After winning the team title at Saturday's Colorado Collegiates, the Air Force wrestling team went into its dual match with Portland State with a great deal of momentum, using its hot streak to stake a 40-6 victory over the Vikings for the Falcons' first win of the year.
The match started out at 125 pounds, where Air Force freshman Matt McDiarmid (Strongsville, Ohio) recorded a pin against Ryan Farwell in a time of 1:50 to give the Falcons an early 6-0 lead. Air Force extended its margin to 12 points when the Vikings were forced to forfeit at 133 pounds.
Another newcomer notched a big win for the Falcons at 141 pounds, where Jake Kriegbaum (Abilene, Kan.) pinned Josh Carroll in 1:57 to put Air Force ahead 18-0. In the 149-pound bout, Portland State's Eddie Dahlen finally put the Vikings on the board, holding off the Falcons' Josh Peterson (Sr., Comstock, Wis.) in the third period to take a 7-5 decision.
The Falcons notched decisions in each of their next two matches, with freshman Dillon Deutsch (Columbia City, Ind.) defeating Kainoa Casco, 8-5, at 157 pounds, followed by a 4-0 decision by 165-pounder Beau Tresemer (Norman, Okla.) over Chris Feist.
Air Force increased its lead to 29-3 when freshman Jacob Lynes (Ponca City, Okla.) recorded a 17-0 tech fall over Josh Gustafson at 174 pounds. Lynes recorded a total of five near falls in the first two periods before riding out his man in the third period. Senior captain Luke Lefever (La Crosse, Wis.) helped continue the Falcons' domination, pinning Sean Murphy in 4:38 to grab six more team points in the 184-pound bout.
The 197-pound match resulted in yet another tech fall, this time by Air Force junior Brenden McLean (Grants Pass, Ore.), who notched a 15-0 tech fall over Jake Schneider in 6:39. Portland State won the last match of the meet, as Allen Kennett registered a 6-4 decision over Trey McLean (Fr., Grants Pass, Ore.), but it was much too little, as the Falcons earned their first dual victory of the season by a commanding 40-7 score.
The Falcons return to action next Saturday, Jan. 22, when they host Adams State for in a dual meet, slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Cadet East Gym.
