Falcons Host Colorado Collegiates On Saturday
The Air Force wrestling team is back in action this weekend, as it hosts the 20th annual Colorado Collegiate Wrestling Tournament on Sat., Jan. 15. The meet, which will be held in the Cadet East Gym, features teams from across the state, along with special guest Portland State. Following the conclusion of the tournament, the Falcons will take on Portland State in a dual meet slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
The Falcons are coming off a 0-3 weekend at the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas, where they faced Stanford, Columbia and Brown to open the dual meet portion of the 2004-05 season. Air Force fell to Stanford, 27-16, Columbia, 39-6, and Brown, 26-15. Leading the way for the Falcons were juniors Brenden McLean and Brandon Strong, who both went 3-0 on the day. This weekend's tournament features Adams State, Air Force, Colorado School of Mines, Northern Colorado, Western State and the University of Colorado Wrestling Club, along with guest Portland State. All teams except Portland State will vie for the team title, while all competing individuals will qualify for individual championships. Air Force has five Colorado Collegiate titles to its name, second only to Adams State, which has won six team titles. Northern Colorado also has five titles, while Southern Colorado (which no longer competes in wrestling) and Western State have two titles each. Meanwhile, the Falcons lead the pack with 45 individual champions and head coach Wayne Baughman has garnered the Coach of the Year award on four separate occasions. This weekend's action begins at 10:00 a.m., with the semi-finals and consolation rounds slated to start at 1:00 p.m. The championship bouts will then commence at 4:30 p.m.
