Wrestling Team Finishes 3-1 at Oregon Classic
Jan. 11, 2002 Redmond, Ore. (Jan. 11) The Air Force wrestling team defeated its first three opponents before falling to No. 15 Illinois, 26-13, in the championship match. Air Force started the day with a commanding 33-7 victory over Cal Fullerton. Kevin Hoy (Hwt), Scott Frohardt (149 lbs) and Terry Parham (174) each pinned their opponents as eight of 10 wrestlers scored wins in their individual matches. The team then pounded Simon Fraser 40-12 in the second dual of the afternoon. Four wrestlers won by fall, including Blaine Brown (157), whose match lasted just 19 seconds. Heath McKim (125), Parham (174) and Hoy (Hwt) also pinned their opponents. In the third dual meet of the afternoon, Air Force defeated Portland State 29-14 to advance to the championships. The first five Falcon grapplers won their matches to give Air Force a commanding 21-point lead. In that stretch Chris Bennett (141) and Frohardt (149) pinned their opponents to garner six team points each. Hoy sealed the scoring with a 14-2 win over PSU's Eric Musto. Although the Falcons wrestled well, they were defeated 26-13 by nationally-ranked Illinois. Andy Peters (133) had one of his best matches of the year, winning a hard-fought battle against Chad Hail, 3-2. Frohardt (149) knocked off nationally-ranked Ryan Berger 4-1. Parham and Hoy also notched victories. Several Air Force wrestlers are ranked nationally. Frohardt is currently ranked 13th in the nation at his weight class.
