Air Force Wrestlers Head to Lone Star Duals

The Air Force wrestling team is back in action this weekend, Jan. 15, at the annual Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Falcons will face No. 19 American, Arizona State, Brown and Wayland Baptist. In addition, the Falcons’ B team will head to Gunnison, Colo., on Saturday to compete in the Borah Duals, hosted by Western State. Air Force will take on CSU-Pueblo, Mesa State and the host Mountaineers.
The Lone Star Duals Schedule... Air Force will start its day at the Lone Star Duals at 10:00 a.m. (CT) with a match versus Brown. The Falcons will face Arizona State at 12:00 p.m., followed by duals against Wayland Baptist and No. 19 American at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively. The Borah Duals Schedule... The Falcons will open up competition at the Borah Duals with a match against CSU-Pueblo at 10:00 a.m., followed by a meeting with host Western State at 12:00 p.m. Air Force concludes the day with a dual versus Mesa State at 2:00 p.m. Live stats will be available for each match, while live streaming video will be also available for the Air Force-Western State dual. Led by sophomore Cole VonOhlen, the Falcons placed 15th at the annual Southern Scuffle, held Dec. 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C. VonOhlen placed fourth at 141 pounds at the Scuffle, finishing with a 6-2 record during the two-day tournament. Meanwhile, two other wrestlers posting winning records, with junior Tyler Untrauer (133) and freshman Jesse Stafford (157) each finishing 3-2 in their respective weight classes. Scouting the Falcons... Air Force heads into this weekend with a 2-1 dual record. Sophomore Cole VonOhlen, ranked 10th in the nation at 141 pounds, leads the team with a 22-6 overall record, while freshman Jesse Stafford (157) is second on the team with 18 victories. Scouting the Bears... Brown enters this weekend’s Lone Star Duals with an 0-2 overall record. Freshman Cortlandt Choate (133) leads the Bears with six wins on the season, while three other Brown wrestlers have tallied five wins each. Scouting the Sun Devils... Arizona State, unranked by the NWCA and tied for 14th in the latest Intermat poll, enters this weekend with a 4-4 overall dual record. The Sun Devils have a pair of wrestlers who are nationally ranked by Intermat. Anthony Robles, who carries a perfect 18-0 record, is rated third in the nation at 125 pounds, while Bubba Jenkins (14-2) is ranked fourth at 157 pounds. Scouting the Pioneers... Wayland Baptist enters this weekend’s Lone Star Duals with an 0-7 overall record. Richard Leal (125) leads the Pioneers with eight wins on the season, while Cesar Alvarez (141) is second with six individual victories. Scouting the Eagles... American, ranked 19th in the nation by the NWCA and eighth by Intermat, enters this weekend with a 6-3 dual record. Five American wrestlers are currently ranked by Intermat, led by top-ranked Steve Fittery (13-0) at 157 pounds and heavyweight Ryan Flores (11-3), ranked third in his weight class. Also ranked are Ganbayar Sanjaa (14th, 149), Matt Mariacher (15th, 141) and Daniel Mitchell (20th, 197). Scouting the Borah Duals Competition... CSU-Pueblo, receiving votes in the latest Division II coaches poll, enters the Borah Duals with a 1-2 dual record. Leading the Thunderwolves is Justin Grant, ranked eighth at 165 pounds. Host Western State, ranked fourth at the Division II level, enters the weekend with a 2-4 dual record. The Mountaineers have four wrestlers who are nationally ranked, led by Donovan McMahill, rated first at 197 pounds. Also ranked for Western State are Charlie Pipher (2nd, 184), Charlie Alexander (2nd, HWT) and Justin Morris (8th, 157). Mesa State enters this weekend’s competition with a 1-3 dual record. Among the leaders for the Mavericks is redshirt freshman Dylan Granard, who currently holds a 19-8 record on the season. In the National Rankings... Sophomore Cole VonOhlen, the Falcons’ lone returning NCAA qualifier, is currently ranked 10th in the nation at 141 pounds in the latest Intermat poll. In addition, VonOhlen is rated eighth by Amateur Wrestling News, D1 College Wrestling and WrestlingReport.com, ninth by The Open Mat and 14th by WIN Magazine. Air Force Athlete of the Week, the latest... Sophomore Cole VonOhlen was named the Air Force Athlete of the Week on Jan. 3 for his performance at the Southern Scuffle, held Dec. 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C. VonOhlen posted a 6-2 record to finish fourth at the annual Southern Scuffle, beginning the tournament with three straight wins on the opening day of competition to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. After a loss to ninth-ranked Andrew Alton of Penn State, VonOhlen advanced through the consolation bracket with three more wins, including decisions over nationally ranked Mike Mangrum of Oregon State and 2010 All-American Germane Lindsey from Ohio. VonOhlen earned his fourth-place finish after dropping a decision to Alton in the third-place match. VonOhlen finished as a placewinner at the Southern Scuffle for the second-straight season after placing fifth at the event in 2009. Up Next... The Falcons head to the West Coast for three dual meets next weekend, Jan. 21-22. Air Force first visits Cal State Fullerton in a 6:00 p.m. (PT) contest on Friday, before heading to Riverside, Calif., for the Cal Baptist Duals on Jan. 22. The Falcons will take on host Cal Baptist at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a match against Menlo at 4:30 p.m.
