Scott Frohardt, T.J. Huxel and Alex Pelbath won individual titles in the middle weights, each claiming individual championships The tournament was an open event and no team scores were kept.
Frohardt went unbeaten through the 149-pound class, defeating current Aggie assistant coach Mike Collier, 5-2, in the championship. Huxel, seeded sixth at 157 pounds, needed overtime to beat Brian Cobb 4-3 in the semifinals, but captured the title by injury default over Cal St. Fullerton's Brian Spalliero. Second-seeded Pelbath won a pair of matches by decision, earning a place in the championship at 165 pounds where he beat Beau Weiner, 6-4.
Four other Air Force wrestlers placed in the tournament. Sam Sherertz, wrestling at 184 pounds, captured second place. He was defeated in the championship match, losing 9-4 to Duke's Tom Cass. Scott Jenkins (164 pounds), Terry Parham (174 pounds) and Kevin Hoy (285 pounds) each advanced through the consolation bracket to capture third place in their respective weight classes.
In dual action on Jan. 6, the Falcons defeated Cal State Fullerton 25-13, before falling to UC Davis 13-21. Against Fullerton, seven wrestlers were victorious in their matches, including Frohardt, who notched the only fall of the dual meet when he pinned Joe Cobo in the second period.
The Falcons suffered a couple of close losses and a forfeit at the 141-pound weight class which cost the team a chance of getting the victory against UC Davis. Frohardt, Sherertz and Hoy were all victorious to remain undefeated in dual meets.
The Falcons (2-1 duals) will head to Pueblo, Colo., Jan. 13 to defend their title at the Colorado Collegiate Tournament. Air Force won the event last year.
