OREM, Utah - Air Force wrestler Josh Martinez was named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 7, following his third-place finish at the Southern Scuffle, held Jan. 1-2. It marks the second weekly honor of the season for Martinez, and third of his career.
Martinez, a sophomore from Colorado Springs, Colo., was the Falcons' top performer at the annual Southern Scuffle, placing third at 125 pounds. Ranked sixth in the nation, Martinez compiled a 6-1 record in the tournament, posting two falls, a technical fall and three decisions.
After winning his first four matches, Martinez suffered his only loss of the tournament in the semifinals, dropping a 7-2 decision to second-ranked Nico Megaludis of Penn State. He bounced back in the consolation bracket with two more wins, including a 6-0 decision over No. 14 David Terao of American in the third-place match. With his performance, Martinez improved to 19-2 on the season.
In addition to earning WWC Wrestler of the Week accolades, Martinez also shared Air Force Athlete of the Week honors for his performance at the Southern Scuffle.
