GREENSBORO, N.C. - Led by sophomore Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.), the Air Force wrestling team concluded the first day of action at the annual Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC Greensboro. After Wednesday's competition, the Falcons are tied for ninth place in the team standings with 34.5 points. Top-ranked Cornell sits atop the team leaderboard with 54 points.

VonOhlen, ranked 10th in the nation at 141 pounds, posted a perfect record on Wednesday to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. In his first match, VonOhlen was dominant against Navy's Raymond Borja, recording a 19-2 technical fall, but faced a tough battle in the next round, narrowly earning a win over Cornell's Hicks Manson with a 4-2 sudden victory decision. VonOhlen concluded the day with a 7-1 decision over Brennan Brumley of Old Dominion.

VonOhlen, who placed fifth at last year's Southern Scuffle, will now face Penn State's Andrew Alton in his quarterfinal match. Alton, ranked ninth in the nation, recorded pins in all three of his matches on Wednesday.

Also advancing to the second day of competition for the Falcons were Josh Mohr (So., Pewaukee, Wis.) and Neil Delaney (Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.), wrestling at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Both Mohr and Delaney posted 2-1 records on Wednesday and will compete in the fourth-round wrestlebacks tomorrow morning.

Mohr, who was granted a first-round bye, posted a fall over Boston's Brock Mantella in his first match of the day, but dropped into the consolation bracket with a 7-2 loss to 15th-ranked Luke Rebertus from Navy. In the wrestlebacks, Mohr recorded another fall, pinning Indiana's Eric Cameron in a time of 2:30. Mohr will move on to the fourth-round of wrestlebacks, where he will face Brice Arand of Oregon State.

Delaney also had a bye into the second round of action, where he captured a 4-1 decision over Duke's Brian Self. After dropping to sixth-ranked Cayle Byers of George Mason in the third round, Delaney earned a 5-2 decision against Penn's Steven Graziano in the consolation bracket. Delaney is now scheduled to face Penn's Micah Burak, ranked seventh in the nation, on Thursday morning.

Two other Falcons finished the tournament with 3-2 records. At 133 pounds, junior Tyler Untrauer (Midwest City, Okla.) won a 12-7 decision over UNC Greensboro's Jamel Johnson in the opening round, but was knocked into the consolation bracket with a loss to North Carolina's Brock Livorio. Untrauer scored two more decisions during the wrestlebacks, but ended the day with a 4-1 loss.

At 157 pounds, freshman Jesse Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) also finished the day with a 3-2 mark, beginning competition with a fall over Derek Goiner from the host Spartans. After a close 7-5 loss in the round of 32, Stafford earned two more victories in the consolation bracket, defeating Virginia Tech's Matt Tusick and Minnesota's Joseph Grygelko. However, Stafford was unable to get past North Carolina's Corey Mock with a loss in the third-round wrestlebacks.

Meanwhile, Andrew Zwirlein (Sr., Nashotah, Wis.), Derek Gillespie (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.) and Josh Kreimier (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo. ) all posted 2-2 records on Wednesday. Zwirlein won his first two matches by fall to advance to the round of 16 at 125 pounds, but dropped a major decision against the top seed before ending his day with a loss in the consolation bracket.

At 133 pounds, Gillespie fell to Old Dominion's nationally ranked Kyle Hutter in his first match, but earned a pair of decisions in the consolation bracket before being eliminated in the third round of wrestlebacks. Meanwhile, Kreimier also lost his first match at 149 pounds, but rebounded with two wins in the wrestlebacks, pinning North Carolina State's Brett Farina, while earning a narrow 9-8 victory over Michigan's Eric Grajales. Unfortunately, Kreimier's day ended with a loss to Josh Wilson of rival Utah Valley.

Also earning at least one victory at the Southern Scuffle were Carter Adams (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.), Clayton Gable (So., Dallastown, Pa.), Joseph Stafford (Sr., Loomis, Calif.), Kazden Ikehara (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii), Cody Davis (Fr., The Woodlands, Texas) and Jared Erickson (So., Newton, Utah).

Competition at the Southern Scuffle concludes tomorrow. The action will begin at 9:00 a.m. (ET) with the quarterfinals and fourth round of wrestle-backs.
