The Air Force wrestling team finished in a strong 14th place out of 46 teams at the prestigious Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational. But the real story was heavyweight wrestler Kevin Hoy. Hoy, ranked sixth in the nation, captured first place in the tournament.

Hoy won the event with a first period pin in the finals against Kellan Fluckiger of Arizona State. He placed higher than returning national champion Tommy Rowlands. Hoy notched three falls and two major decisions in becoming the tournament champion.

Freshman Matt Benza (133 pounds) had an impressive tournament, finishing with a 3-2 record. His only losses were against the eventual third- and fourth-place winners. Heath McKim (125) also finished 3-2.

While the varsity was in Las Vegas, the junior varsity squad was in Kansas participating in the Fort Hays Open. Luke Vitolo (133) placed second, while Luke Lefever (184) placed third.

The Falcons are off the rest of the year and will not return to action until Jan. 11, 2003. The varsity squad will head to Davis, Calif., for the annual Aggie Open, while the JV team will be in Gunnison, Colo., for the Borah Invitational.
