HAYS, Kan. - With five placewinners, including individual champion Daniel Baucke (Sr., Memphis, Tenn.), the Air Force wrestling team concluded competition at the FHSU-Bob Smith Open, held at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.
Baucke captured the first tournament title of his career, rattling off four wins to claim first place at 157 pounds. In addition to earning a win by injury default, Baucke scored a technical fall and two falls, pinning his opponent in the championship bout in just 51 seconds.
Junior Carter McElhany (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted a 4-1 record to place second at 133 pounds, scoring four straight decisions before dropping a 2-1 decision in the title match. At 197 pounds, freshman Parker Hines (Ellsworth, Wis.) earned a third-place showing, registering a 4-1 record on the day, with three decisions and a major decision.
The Falcons also had two wrestlers finish fourth in their respective weight classes. At 157 pounds, freshman Connor Hedash (Slatington, Pa.) took fourth place with a 5-2 record on the day, including a major decision and three decisions. Meanwhile, Willie Baker (So., Jackson, Minn.) posted a 4-2 mark at 174 pounds, winning a pair of major decisions and a pair of decisions en route to his fourth-place showing.
The Falcons are off from competition for the rest of the month, but will return to action Jan. 1-2, at the annual Southern Scuffle, hosted by Chattanooga.
