Air Force Wraps Up Competition at Kaufman/Brand Open

Omaha, Neb. - With a pair of placewinners, the Air Force wrestling team wrapped up competition Saturday at the Kaufman/Brand Open, hosted by Nebraska-Omaha. In the Elite Division, sophomore Tyler French (Malta, Mont.) took fourth place at 174 pounds. Although French dropped his first match to Minnesota's Mitch Kuhlman, he advanced through the consolation bracket, registering decisions over Nebraska's Andy Johnson, UCD's John Clark, Nebraska-Kearney's Paul Sutton and Lehigh's Manuel Schubert. After pinning Iowa's Chad Beatty in a time of 3:12, French moved into the third-place game but lost a 14-1 major decision to Gabe Dretsch of Minnesota, finishing fourth. In the Amateur Division, freshman Derek Gillespie (Chesapeake, Va.) was a placewinner for the second-straight weekend, this time finishing third at 133 pounds. Gillespie opened with a pair of decisions, defeating Augustana's Chris Fink and Nebraska-Omaha's Mario Morgan, before dropping a 14-4 major decision to Northern Iowa's Trenton Washington. Gillespie rebounded by pinning Iowa's Montell Marion in a time of 4:58 before registering another decision against Morgan in the third-place bout. The Falcons are back in action on Dec. 1, when they travel to Hays, Kan., for the Fort Hays Open.
