LARAMIE, Wyo. - Led by individual titles from Cole VonOhlen (So., Jackson, Minn.) and Joseph Stafford (Sr., Loomis, Calif.), the Air Force wrestling team got the 2010-11 season off to a strong start, finishing with 13 placewinners at the Cowboy Open, hosted by Wyoming.
VonOhlen captured the title at 141 pounds in the Elite Division for the second-straight season, posting a 4-0 record on the day. Following a pair of decisions in his first two bouts, VonOhlen recorded a 9-1 major decision over Wyoming's Shane Doughman to move into the championship match. VonOhlen was able to secure a 6-4 decision over conference rival Wyatt Ray of Utah Valley in the final bout to take the title.
Meanwhile, Stafford recorded three straight victories to win the 174 weight class in the Elite Division. Stafford recorded decisions in his first two bouts to earn a trip to the title match against teammate Clayton Gable (So., Dallastown, Pa.). Aided by experience, the Falcons' team captain was able to earn the 5-2 decision to win the first tournament title of his collegiate career.
Four other wrestlers finished as runners-up in the Elite Division. Senior Derek Gillespie (Chesapeake, Va.) claimed second place at 133 pounds, posting a 3-1 record, which included a technical fall in the semifinal round. Freshman Josh Kreimier (Fort Collins, Colo.) had a strong collegiate debut, taking second place at 149 pounds. Kreimier also registered a 3-1 record on the day, including a fall against Wyoming's Jimmy Belleville to move into the title match.
Wade Stowe (Sr., The Colony, Texas) also took second place, wrestling at 157 pounds in the Elite Division. Stowe recorded back-to-back falls in his first two bouts of the day, before finishing with a 3-1 record on the afternoon. Finally, Gable was the runner-up at 174 pounds following his loss to Stafford. Gable posted a pair of victories to earn a spot in the title match, including a win by fall.
Meanwhile, freshman Greg Rinker (Northampton, Pa.) was the runner-up at 125 pounds in the Amateur Division. Rinker posted two victories en route to the championship bout, recording a fall and a decision before coming up short in the title match.
A pair of freshmen earned third-place finishes on Saturday, with Jarret Hoeppner (Apple Valley, Minn.) taking third place at 165 pounds in the Elite Division, while Devin Hightower (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed third at 174 pounds in the Amateur Division.
In addition, four other Air Force wrestlers finished fourth in their respective weight classes. In the Amateur Division, freshmen Jesse Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) and Cody Davis (The Woodlands, Texas) took fourth at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. In the Elite Division, Untrauer took fourth place at 133 pounds, while Neil Delaney (Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed fourth at 197 pounds.
The Falcons are back in action next weekend, Nov. 20, at the Kaufman-Brand Open, hosted by Nebraska-Omaha.
