LARAMIE, Wyo. - Led by three individual titles, the Air Force wrestling got the 2013-14 season off to a strong start on Saturday, finishing with 12 total placewinners at the Cowboy Open, hosted by Wyoming.
Freshmen David Walker (St. Marys, Iowa) and Parker Hines (Ellsworth, Wis.), along with sophomore Marcus Malecek (Hammond, Wis.), captured individual titles in the Cowboy Open's Amateur Division. Walker, competing at 141 pounds, earned his first collegiate title by compiling a 5-0 record on Saturday. After opening the day with a fall, Walker recorded a pair of decisions and a pair of major decisions, including a 14-4 major decision in the championship bout.
Hines posted a 4-0 mark at 197 pounds en route to his first-place showing, registering a major decision in his first match of the day. He also scored a fall and two decisions, including a 3-2 win in the championship match. Meanwhile, Malecek also put together a 4-0 record on Saturday to earn his title at heavyweight, scoring three decisions and a major decision.
Also in the Amateur bracket, freshmen Anthony McHugh (Lewis Center, Ohio) and Connor Hedash (Slatington, Pa.), placed third at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively. McHugh posted a 6-1 record which included four falls, while Hedash registered a 7-1 mark, including a fall in the third-place match. Rounding out the group of Air Force placewinners in the Amateur Division was freshman Jerry McGinty (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), who took fourth place at 149 pounds.
Senior Greg Rinker (Northampton, Pa.) and sophomore Konner Witt (Oak Harbor, Ohio) were Air Force's top performers in the Elite bracket, finishing second at 133 and 174 pounds, respectively. Rinker posted a pair of decisions in his first two matches before dropping the championship match by a major decision. Meanwhile Witt began the day with four wins, including a pair of falls, but came up just short in the title bout, losing 3-2.
Junior Carter McElhany (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added a third-place finish for the Falcons at 133 pounds in the Elite Division, putting together a 4-1 record on the day, while Scott Reilly (So., Stafford, Va.) took third place at 174 pounds with a 5-1 record, earning a 5-2 win over teammate Dan Barringer (Sr., Monument, Colo.) in the third-place match. Finishing fourth in the Elite Division for Air Force on Saturday were Barringer, with a 4-2 record, and senior Evan Gros (Sr., Lake Orion, Mich.), who put together a 3-2 mark at 197 pounds.
The Falcons are back in action on Friday, Nov. 8, when they head to Broomfield, Colo., for a neutral-site dual versus Northwestern, while opening their home dual slate on Sunday, Nov. 10, with a 1:00 p.m. match against Stanford.
