USAFA, Colo. -
The Air Force wrestling team competed in Clune Arena for the first time during the 2010-11 season as it hosted the annual Blue-Silver Intrasquad Match Thursday evening in Clune Arena. The Silver team edged out the Blue team, 24-18, as the competitors battled for spots in the Falcons' starting lineup heading into the season.
The first bout of the night came at 133 pounds, as Tyler Untrauer (Jr., Midwest City, Okla.) faced off against returning starter Derek Gillespie (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.). Following a scoreless opening period, Gillespie began the second period with an escape, and after a second stalling call on Untrauer, he took a 2-0 lead into the final period. Neither wrestler scored in the third period, but with 1:46 of riding time, Gillespie earned the 3-0 victory for the Silver team.
At 157 pounds, newcomer Jesse Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) challenged returning starter Alec Williams (Fultondale, Ala.). Williams scored an early takedown and increased his advantage to 4-0 before Stafford scored a reversal near the end of the first period to cut the margin to two points. Williams scored another takedown in the second period, but an escape by Stafford brought the score to 6-3 going into the final period. Williams started the last period in the down position, and after a quick escape, scored his third takedown of the match. With 4:45 in riding time, Williams captured the 10-3 decision to give the Silver team a 6-0 lead.
The 165-pound bout was a competition between two freshmen, Jarrett Hoeppner (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Carter Adams (Coon Rapids, Minn.). Adams scored a quick takedown, but Hoeppner was able to get the escape as the first period ended with a 2-1 score. Following a scoreless second period, Hoeppner tied the match at 2-2 with an escape to start the third period. The score remained tied at the end of regulation, sending the bout into overtime, where Adams notched his second takedown to grab the 4-2 sudden victory decision.
With the Silver team leading the match 9-0, senior captain Joseph Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) aimed to put the Blue team on the board for the first time, as he matched up with freshman Devin Hightower (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Stafford put forth a strong performance in the opening period, scoring a pair of takedowns and a two-point near fall. He extended his lead to 7-1 after two period, and with a reversal to start the final period, captured the 9-2 decision.
The 184-pound bout was another tightly contested match, with senior Kazden Ikehara (Mililani, Hawaii) and sophomore Josh Mohr (Pewaukee, Wis.) wrestling to a 1-1 draw after three periods. There were no more points scored in the sudden victory overtime period, but Mohr was able to end the stalemate with an escape in the tiebreaker to put the Silver team back up by nine at 12-3.
The first fall of the evening came during the 197-pound match-up, where returning starter Neil Delaney (Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) faced newcomer Cody Davis (The Woodlands, Texas). Delaney took advantage of his experience, scoring a fall in a time of 2:17 to bring the Blue team back to within three points in the team scoring.
The Silver team was able to extend its lead once more, following a fall by Jared Erickson (So., Newton, Utah) in the heavyweight match-up. Erickson scored two takedowns in the opening period to take a 4-1 lead over the Blue team's Caleb Egli (Colorado Springs, Colo.) before pinning Egli with 1:06 remaining in the second period.
While the Silver team led, 18-9, after the heavyweight bout, there were still three more matches left on the slate. Due to the postponement of the originally scheduled finals matches at 125, 141 and 149 pounds, exhibitions were performed in those weight classes, with all three bouts contributing to the final team score.
At 125 pounds, freshman Greg Rinker (Northampton, Pa.) faced off against sophomore Randy Pence (Columbia Station, Ohio). Rinker put forth a strong effort in his Air Force debut, pinning Pence just 39 seconds into the opening period. With his win, Rinker cut the Blue team's deficit to three points once more.
In the next exhibition match, Daniel Baucke (Fr., Memphis, Tenn.) took on sophomore Logan Burch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 141 pounds. Baucke scored a takedown 13 seconds into the period and retained the advantage throughout, scoring a three-point near fall to take a 5-0 lead. Burch won the battle in the second period, but Baucke still retained a 7-3 lead going into the final period. The action went back-and-forth in the third period, with each wrestler scoring four points, but with Baucke's accumulated riding time, he scored the 12-7 decision for the Blue team.
With the team score tied at 18-18, the final exhibition of the evening would decide the winner of this year's intrasquad match. Sophomore Kevin Sober (Olney Springs, Colo.) took the mat for the Blue team, while Josh Kreimier (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) wrestled for the Silver team. Kreimier controlled the pace from the start, scoring a pair of takedowns and a three-point near fall before recording the pin just over a minute and a half into the bout. With his victory, the Silver team captured the team win by a final 24-18 margin.
The Falcons' season officially starts Nov. 13, when the team heads to Laramie, Wyo., for the annual Cowboy Open, hosted by Wyoming.
