March 4, 2018

TULSA, Okla. – Senior Dane Robbins finished fifth and junior Alex Mossing finished sixth at the 2018 Big 12 Wrestling Conference Championships, Saturday evening, in the BOK Center of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The fifth-place finish guaranteed Robbins’ first career visit to the NCAA championship tournament.

Robbins took on Jarrett Degen of Iowa State in the consolation semi-finals. Degen notched two first-round takedowns, each met with an escape by Robbins. Robbins tallied his first takedown in the second period but Degen was able to rally and escape the Falcon.  Degen added another takedown in the third period to seal the deal over Robbins, 9-5.

Robbins met with Davion Jeffries (OU) in the battle for fifth-place and an automatic bid into the NCAA national championship.  The Fairfax, Virginia, native wasted no time getting to Jeffries’ legs and scoring a takedown. Jeffries escaped Robbins for a point before the period ended.  Robbins went on to get a takedown in each of the remaining periods, tallying three takedowns and two escapes on the match.  Jeffries tallied three escape but was unable to take Robbins down.  The win guaranteed Robbins’ first career visit to the NCAA tournament, becoming the 91st NCAA Div. I qualifier at Air Force.

Mossing squared up with Chase Straw of Iowa State in his consolation semi-finals bout. Mossing jumped out to an early lead, recording two first-period takedowns. Straw added to escape points in the first period.  Mossing tallied an escape point in the otherwise scoreless second period while Straw logged over a minute of riding time.  An early escape and late takedown propelled the Cyclone to a one-point lead at the final whistle. Mossing was sent to the fifth-place bout in the wake of his 6-5 loss.

Mossing took on Logan Ryan of Northern Iowa in the battle for fifth. Ryan notched the only takedown of the match in the first period.  A staunch defensive battle yielded both wrestlers a pair of escape points and no offensive points in the final two periods. At the final whistle, Ryan held the lead, 3-2.  The sixth-place finished marked Mossing’s second Big 12 podium finish in as many tries.

Air Force continues action as Robbins represents the Falcons at the NCAA championship tournament, Mar. 15-17, in Cleveland, Ohio.
