GOLDEN, Colo. - Led by freshman Greg Rinker (Northampton, Pa.), the Air Force wrestling team finished with 11 placewinners at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open, hosted Saturday by Colorado School of Mines.
Rinker captured the title at 125 pounds, posting a perfect 4-0 on Saturday. After winning his first match in a time of 50 seconds, Rinker pinned his second opponent in a season-best time of 10 seconds. He also notched falls in each of his final two matches, pinning Utah Valley's Colby Christensen in a time of 4:09. Rinker now has a team-leading 11 falls on the season.
Four other Air Force wrestlers finished second in their respective weight classes, compiling 3-1 records on the day. Junior Tyler Untrauer (Midwest City, Okla.) was the runner-up at 133 pounds, earning a technical fall and a pair of decisions en route to the championship bout, where he dropped a close 2-1 decision.
At 157 pounds, Tanner Weltzin (Jr., Alexandria, Minn.) took second place, recording a pair of falls--his first of the season--and a sudden victory decision over teammate Justin Martinez (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) in his first three matches. However, Weltzin also lost a narrow decision in the championship match, falling 4-3.
Freshman Dan Barringer (Monument, Colo.) was the runner-up at 165 pounds, opening the day with a technical fall, followed by a pair of falls. Barringer collided with former Western State wrestler Camille DuPont in the championship match, dropping a major decision to the two-time All-American.
Also finishing second in his weight class was freshman Devin Hightower (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who was the runner-up at 174 pounds. Hightower registered a fall in his first match of the day, while earning a major decision and a decision in his next two bouts. He ended the day with a close 2-0 loss to Brandon Sheldon from the host Orediggers.
Other placewinners for the Falcons on Saturday included Evan Gros (Fr., Lake Orion, Mich.), who placed fourth at 184 pounds, fifth-place finishers Martinez, Jarret Hoeppner (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Cody Davis (Fr., The Woodlands, Texas) at 157, 165 and 197 pounds, respectively, and sixth-place finishers Carter Adams (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) at 165 pounds and Chris Morales (Fr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) at 174 pounds.
