Falcons Compile 2-1 Record at Borah Duals
Jan. 24, 2009
GUNNISON, Colo. - Led by three wins from senior captain Stephen Crozier (Monona, Iowa), the Air Force wrestling team put together a 2-1 record Saturday at the Borah Duals, hosted by Western State. The Falcons defeated CSU-Pueblo, 29-13, and Mesa State, 36-3, but fell to the host Mountaineers, 26-9. The Falcons' dual record now moves to 3-8 on the season. Against CSU-Pueblo, the Falcons got out to a 7-0 lead following a decision by Andrew Zwirlein (So., Nashotah, Wis.) at 125 pounds and a major decision from Tyler Untrauer (Fr., Midwest City, Okla.) at 133 pounds. However, the Thunderwolves posted victories in the next three weight classes--by decision, major decision and fall--to stake a 13-7 advantage. Those would prove to be the only CSU-Pueblo victories, as Air Force closed out the match with five straight wins. Crozier started the Falcons' streak with a 14-5 major decision over Martin Dick at 165 pounds, while junior Joshua Smith (Orem, Utah) registered a fall, his fastest of the year, at 174 pounds. A pair of decisions by Sterling Tribble (Sr., Midwest City, Okla.) and James Ciccone (Jr., Mentor, Ohio) guaranteed the Air Force victory, while sophomore Josh Larson (So., Windsor, Colo.) closed out the match with a fall over Frank Sandoval in the heavyweight bout. Air Force's second match of the day came against host Western State, which is currently ranked sixth in the nation among Division II teams. The Mountaineers got out to a quick 8-0 lead with a pair of major decisions in the opening weight classes, before Samuel Sheppard (Jr., Ramstein AB, Germany) put the Falcons on the board, winning a 9-6 decision over Tate Lowe at 141 pounds.
The Falcons dropped their next two bouts to trail 17-3 before Crozier recorded his second win of the day, a 7-5 decision against Skye Wells. Then, in the final four bouts of the match versus Western State, Air Force managed just one victory, a 7-3 decision by Justin Shadrix (Jr., Bremen, Ga.) at 184 pounds, as the Mountaineers grabbed the dual win. In its final dual on Saturday, Air Force faced off against Mesa State. Zwirlein opened the scoring with his second decision of the day, while the Mavericks came right back with a win at 133 pounds. However, the Falcons dominated the rest of the match, winning the final eight bouts. Air Force posted back-to-back falls at the 141 and 149 weight classes, with Sheppard and Alec Williams (Fr., Birmingham, Ala.) each pinning their opponents. Sophomore Joseph Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) followed with his first win of the day, a 6-2 decision over Chase Walker, who is currently ranked third at the Division II level. Crozier added his third decision of the afternoon, while Smith, Shadrix and Chris Thomas (So., El Cajon, Calif.) all scored decisions to give the Falcons a 30-3 advantage going into the final bout. Larson closed things out with his second fall of the day to help Air Force roll to a 36-3 victory. Air Force returns to conference action next weekend, Jan. 30-31, when it hosts North Dakota State and South Dakota State. The match against NDSU is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, while the Falcons take on SDSU Saturday night at 7:30. Both contests will be held in Clune Arena.
