Falcons' Joshua Smith Wins Title at Glen Brand Open
Jan. 17, 2009
OMAHA, Neb. - Junior Joshua Smith (Orem, Utah) led a group of Falcons on Saturday at the Glen Brand Open, hosted by Nebraska-Omaha. Smith captured the title, the first of his career, in the 174-pound weight class. Smith opened the day with a fall, pinning Cody Kersten of Iowa Central CC in a time of 1:45. Smith followed that victory with an 8-5 decision over Iowa State's Chris Pursel, before notching his second fall of the day. This time the pin, in a time of 1:37, came against Lindenwood's Josh Hauk, who had won both of his first two bouts by fall. In the championship bout, Smith took on Billy Lewis of Iowa State and escaped with a 3-1 victory. Among the six other Falcons competing at the Glen Brand Open on Saturday were sophomores Brett Boyce (Brigham City, Utah), who tallied a pair of falls at 184 pounds, and Matt Torrence (Tulsa, Okla.), who registered three victories at 149 pounds. Air Force is back in action next weekend, Jan. 24, at the Borah Duals, hosted by Western Colorado in Gunnison, Colo.
