GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -

Competing in the annual Lone Star Duals on Saturday, the Air Force wrestling team posted a 1-2 record on the day. The Falcons (2-5) defeated Brown, 18-15, but fell to Northwestern, 26-15, and No. 23 Arizona State, 38-6.

Air Force opened the day with a dual meet versus Northwestern, and claimed an early 6-0 advantage after the first bout with a forfeit victory at 125 pounds before a major decision by the Wildcats at 133 pounds cut the margin to 6-4. Freshman Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.), ranked 14th in the nation at 141 pounds, extended Air Force’s lead to 12-4 after pinning Bobby Joyce in a time of 2:17.

However, Northwestern rattled off victories in the next six bouts to take a commanding 26-12 lead. Earning the final points of the match for the Falcons was senior heavyweight Stephen Larson (Lakeville, Minn.), who captured a 9-4 decision over Marcus Shrewsbury to bring the final score to 26-15.

The Falcons’ dual versus Brown was close throughout, with each team winning five of the 10 bouts. The Bears claimed a decision at 125 pounds, but Air Force picked up decisions from Derek Gillespie (Jr., Chesapeake, Va.) and VonOhlen at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, to take the advantage. The two teams alternated winning decisions through the next three weight classes, with Alec Williams (So., Fultondale, Ala.) claiming a 6-4 victory at 157 pounds for Air Force.

The team score was tied at 9-9 entering the 174-pound bout, where senior Tyler French (Malta, Mont.) registered a fall over Ziad Kharbush in a time of 3:34, putting the Falcons back on top. Still, Brown managed decisions in the next two weight classes to knot the score at 15-15 going into the final match.

With the heavyweight bout proving to be the deciding match in the team scoring, Larson secured an 8-2 decision over Larry Otsuka to give Air Force the 18-15 dual victory over Brown.

Unfortunately, the Falcons did not have much success against No. 23 Arizona State in the final dual meet of the afternoon, despite some close contests. VonOhlen dropped a close 6-4 decision to 16th-ranked Chris Drouin, while the Sun Devils’ 16th-ranked heavyweight, Eric Nye, needed an overtime period to defeat Larson, 2-1. The only points for Air Force in the 38-6 loss to ASU came in a forfeit victory at 197 pounds.

The Falcons are back in action next weekend, Jan. 23, when they head to Gunnison, Colo., for the Borah Duals, hosted by Western State. There, Air Force will face CSU-Pueblo, Mesa State and the host Mountaineers.

“It is always great to have an opportunity to wrestler the other schools in Colorado,” said Air Force head coach Joel Sharratt. “The people of Colorado and the local wrestlers have some great collegiate opportunities right here at home. We are glad to be a part of this event held annually in Gunnison.”
