Jan. 11, 2013
USAFA, Colo. - Competing in its first home dual of the season, the Air Force wrestling team fell to No. 13 Oregon State, 32-7, in non-conference action. With the loss, the Falcons, rated 25th in the latest InterMat rankings, drop to 3-1 overall on the season, while the Beavers improve to 3-3.
Oregon State was led by five wrestlers ranked in the top 10 nationally, while the Falcons were without both of their nationally ranked wrestlers, senior Cole VonOhlen and freshman Josh Martinez. The Beavers came away with a win in the opening match, as 10th-ranked RJ Pena earned a 5-1 decision over the Falcons' Josh Kreimier (Fort Collins, Colo.) at 157 pounds.
Air Force was able to get on the scoreboard and take the team lead in the second bout of the evening, as sophomore Jesse Stafford (Loomis, Calif.) shut out Alex Elder for a 9-0 major decision at 165 pounds. The Beavers responded with a first-period fall in the next match, while freshman Konner Witt (Oak Harbor, Ohio) earned a 6-2 decision at 184 pounds to put the Falcons back on the board.
The closest match of the evening was in the heavyweight bout, with the Falcons' Bentley Alsup (So., Missoula, Mont.) taking on fifth-ranked Chad Hanke. With Hanke leading 4-2 after the first two periods, Alsup chose the neutral position to begin the final period. Neither wrestler was able to score until 20 seconds remaining on the clock, when Alsup registered his first takedown of the match to tie the score at 4-4. However, Hanke had a riding time point locked up and scored an escape to take the 6-4 decision.
Air Force's varsity team will be back in action on Sunday, as it hosts Northern Iowa and New Mexico Highlands in back-to-back duals. Competition is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. in Clune Arena.
