Falcons Drop Pair of Duals in California
Jan. 11, 2009
FULLERTON, Calif. - Despite a pair of wins from both Stephen Crozier (Sr., Monona, Iowa) and Tyler French (Jr., Malta, Mont.), the Air Force wrestling team dropped a pair of dual meets Sunday, falling to host Cal State Fullerton, 37-7, and San Francisco State, 26-13. With the losses, the Falcons fall to 1-5 on the season. In the first match of the day, Air Force took on host Cal State Fullerton. The Titans got out to a strong start, winning the first six bouts to stake a 29-0 lead in the team standings. Crozier stopped Fullerton's run, registering the Falcons' first individual win, with a 7-1 decision over Devin Velasquez at 165 pounds. French gave Air Force its two wins in a row against the Titans, scoring a 10-2 major decision over Todd Noel in the 174-pound bout, but Fullerton won the final two weight classes to take the 37-7 victory. The Falcons capped the evening with a dual versus San Francisco State, which is currently ranked 20th among Division II schools. Again, Air Force got into an early hole in the team scoring, trailing 15-0 after four bouts. Sophomore Joseph Stafford (Loomis, Calif.), wrestling at 157 pounds, posted the first Falcon win against the Gators, pinning Markham Bertron in a time of 4:17. Crozier and French added victories for Air Force in their respective weight classes, starting with an 18-4 major decision by Crozier over Matt Mungo. French's 10-3 decision over Arman Ostadsharif pulled the Falcons within two points in the team scoring, but Air Force was unable to secure a victory in the final three weight classes, falling 26-13 to San Francisco State. With his two wins on Sunday, Crozier remained undefeated on the weekend (also scoring a victory against Cal Baptist on Saturday). His overall record improves to a team-best 14-10 on the year, while also moving to 5-1 in dual action.
The Falcons open the 2008-09 next weekend, Jan. 16, as they host Stanford in non-conference action. The dual, which will be held in Clune Arena, is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. Cal State Fullerton 37, Air Force 7 |
