Jan. 8, 2012
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Despite falls from juniors Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.) and Clayton Gable (Dallastown, Pa.), the Air Force wrestling team suffered a 33-12 loss to Western Wrestling Conference opponent Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon. Northern Iowa won the first four bouts of the afternoon to stake an 18-0 lead over Air Force before VonOhlen earned a fall in his match at 149 pounds to put the Falcons on the board. VonOhlen, ranked fifth in the nation, pinned Clay Welter in a time of 4:11 to improve to 18-2 on the season. At 157 pounds, sophomore Josh Kreimier (Fort Collins, Colo.) had an exciting bout against returning NCAA qualifier David Bonin, coming back from a 5-2 deficit to send the match into overtime. However, Bonin scored a takedown in the extra period to earn the 7-5 decision for the Panthers. UNI increased its lead to 24-6 with a win at 165 pounds, while Air Force got back on the scoreboard with a win at 174 pounds as Gable posted the fastest fall of his career, pinning Onni Prestidge in just 29 seconds. Unfortunately, Air Force was unable to earn wins in its final two matches of the dual, giving up a fall and a decision in the 33-12 loss. The Falcons (1-1, 0-1) return to action next Saturday, Jan. 14, when they head to Grand Prairie, Texas, to take part in the annual Lone Star Duals.
