Air Force Finishes 12th at Southern Scuffle

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Led by a third-place showing by sophomore Josh Martinez, the Air Force wrestling team compiled 44.5 points to place 12th at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by Chattanooga.

    Martinez posted a 2-1 mark on Thursday to earn his third-place showing, improving on his fourth-place showing from the 2013 Southern Scuffle. After going undefeated in Wednesday's competition, Martinez continued his win streak on Thursday morning, pinning Bucknell's Paul Petrov in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Martinez dropped a tough 7-2 decision to second-ranked Nico Megaludis of Penn State, but bounced back in the third-place match with a 6-0 decision over American's 14th-ranked David Terao.

    With his performance this week, Martinez, who is ranked sixth in the nation, improved to 18-2 on the season.

    Also competing for Air Force on Thursday were Carter McElhany (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Greg Rinker (Sr., Northampton, Pa.) at 133 pounds, Josh Kreimier (Sr., Fort Collins, Colo.) at 157 pounds, Jesse Stafford (Jr., Loomis, Calif.) at 165 pounds, Scott Reilly (So., Stafford, Va.) and Konner Witt (So., Oak Harbor, Ohio) at 174 pounds, Devin Hightower (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 184 pounds and Greg Isley (Sr., Toledo, Ohio) at 197 pounds. Rinker, Stafford and Witt all won their first bouts on Thursday to contribute to the team scoring.

     

     

    The Falcons return to action Jan. 11, when they head to Gunnison, Colo., for the Borah Duals, hosted by Western State Colorado.
