CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -
Finishing with three placewinners, the Air Force wrestling team recorded 62.5 points to place eighth in the team standings at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Leading the way for the Falcons was senior captain Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.), who finished as the runner-up at 149 pounds. Freshman Josh Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) took fourth place at 125 pounds, while senior Josh Mohr (Pewaukee, Wis.) placed eighth at 197 pounds.
VonOhlen, ranked seventh in the nation, posted a 1-1 record on Wednesday, knocking off second-ranked Dylan Ness of Minnesota in the semifinals with a 10-5 decision. Seeded third in the tournament, VonOhlen advanced to the title match where he dropped to Oklahoma State's top-ranked Jordan Oliver, finishing second.
After falling to eighth-ranked Matt Snyder of Virginia, Martinez rebounded in the consolation semifinals with a 7-1 decision over Old Dominion's Rob Deutsch. Seeded seventh in the tournament, Martinez met Cornell's 10th-ranked Nahshon Garrett in the third-place match, but dropped a major decision to finish fourth.
Meanwhile, Mohr won his first match of the day, a 4-3 decision over Navy's Paul Rands, to guarantee his own top-eight finish. Entering the tournament as an unseeded wrestler, Mohr dropped a pair of decisions in his next two bouts to place eighth.
The Falcons are back in action next Friday, Jan. 11, as they open their home dual slate versus 10th-ranked Oregon State.
