After one day of action, the Air Force wrestling team sits in seventh place in the team standings at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The Falcons, who have five wrestlers still alive in the brackets, currently have 48.5 points.
Among the Air Force wrestlers still competing in the tournament are freshman Josh Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.), who both went undefeated on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals. Meanwhile, Josh Kreimier (Jr., Fort Collins, Colo.), Tyler Mergen (Fr., Monticello, Minn.) and Josh Mohr (Sr., Pewaukee, Wis.) will all compete on Wednesday in the consolation bracket of their respective weight classes.
Martinez, seeded seventh and ranked 12th by InterMat at 125 pounds, posted three victories on the first day of competition to advance to Wednesday's semifinals. After earning decisions against Joaquin Marquez (The Citadel) and Brian Bokoski (North Carolina), Martinez came up with an impressive quarterfinal win, defeating seventh-ranked David Thorn of Minnesota with a 13-9 sudden victory decision. Martinez will move on to face Virginia's eighth-ranked Matt Snyder on Wednesday.
Also advancing to the semifinals for Air Force was VonOhlen. Seeded third and ranked seventh at 149 pounds, VonOhlen went 4-0 on Tuesday to earn his semifinal spot. He recorded falls in each of his first three matches to move his season fall total to 12, before defeating 18th-ranked Drake Houdashelt (Missouri) in a 9-7 decision. VonOhlen will take on second-ranked Dylan Ness of Minnesota in his semifinal match tomorrow.
Kreimier, ranked 17th nationally at 157 pounds, posted a 2-1 record on Tuesday and will continue action tomorrow versus Ohio's Spartak Chino in the consolation bracket. After winning his first match in a tiebreaker, Kreimier followed with a 17-6 major decision before dropping a narrow 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals.
Mergen, wrestling at 165 pounds, won his first match by decision before dropping a narrow 2-0 contest to 12th-ranked Zach Toal (Missouri). He went on to score two more decisions in the consolation bracket to move to 3-1 on the day and will face 10th-ranked Cody Yohn of Minnesota in the next round.
Rounding out the group of Air Force competitors to remain in action at the Southern Scuffle is Mohr, wrestling at 197 pounds. Mohr posted a major decision over Navy's Colynn Cook before dropping a decision to eighth-ranked Jake Meredith of Arizona State. Mohr recorded two more decisions in the consolation bracket and will wrestle Navy's Paul Rands tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow's action at the Southern Scuffle is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. (CT) with the consolation fourth round, while semifinals are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. Meanwhile, finals and medal matches are projected to begin at 6:00 p.m.
