Thomas scores four as Falcons win WWPA fifth-place game
Junior Riley Thomas scored four goals, including the game-winner, to lead Air Force to a 10-9 win over Santa Clara in the fifth-place game of the Western Water Polo Association Championships, Sunday, Nov. 20, in Santa Clara, Calif. Air Force closes out the 2016 season with an 11-16 overall record.

THIS WEEK: Air Force (5-13 overall and 1-4 WWPA) closes out the regular season with a pair of conference road games. The Falcons face Fresno Pacific (6-15, 0-5 WWPA) on Friday, Nov. 3, at noon PT, in Fresno, Calif., and then will meet Santa Clara (6-13, 1-4 WWPA) on Sunday, Nov. 5, at noon PT, in Santa Clara, Calif.

SERIES RECORDS: Air Force and Fresno Pacific will meet for the 10th time and the Falcons hold an 8-1 lead in the series that began in 2010. The Falcons defeated Fresno Pacific twice last season, including once in the WWPA Tournament. Air Force and Santa Clara will meet for the 55th time. The Falcons hold a 41-13 lead in the series that began in 1971. The Falcons and Broncos split two games last season. Air Force defeated Santa Clara in the WWPA Tournament last season.

MOST RECENTLY:  Cal Baptist rallied for two late goals to force overtime and then defeated Air Force, 15-14 in overtime, in a Western Water Polo Association game, Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Academy’s Cadet Natatorium.
Air Force senior Riley Thomas scored six goals and added an assist and a steal. Luke Andres and Justin Harrison each had two goals while Michael Miller had three assists.
Cal Baptist, ranked 17th in the nation, took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Falcons battled back for an 8-6 lead at the half.  Thomas scored four times in the second quarter and added another early in the third for a  9-6 lead.  CBU scored two late goals in the third, but the Falcons had an 11-9 lead entering the fourth quarter. After the Falcons and Lancers traded goals early in the fourth, CBU scored twice in the final 1:46 of the fourth to tie the game at 12-12 and force overtime.
In overtime, CBU scored first, but the Falcons answered as Eric Kawecki tied the game. CBU then scored the next two goals for a 15-13 lead. With 1:33 left in the second overtime, Ryan Dorris scored, but the Falcons could not find the equalizer.
The teams combined for 79 shots as Air Force had 40 and CBU had 39.

STAT LEADERS:  Senior Riley Thomas leads the team with 39 goals and 54 points. Senior Justin Harrison is second with 28 goals and 33 points.  Freshman James Burke is sixth in the league with 144 saves.

WWPA TOURNAMENT AHEAD: Following this week’s games, the Falcons will compete in the 2017 Western Water Polo Association Championships, Nov. 17-19, at the Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla, Calif. UC San Diego is the host of the tournament.
