No. 19 Air Force Hosts Iona in Pair of Non-Conference Contests

    The 19th-ranked Air Force water polo team returns to action this weekend, Oct. 18-19, with its first and only home games of the season. The Falcons will host Iona for two contests, slated for 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.

    Last Time Out...
    The Falcons went undefeated in five games on Oct. 3-5, posting wins over George Washington, Pomona-Pitzer, Mercyhurst and Whittier at the Claremont Convergence Tournament, while defeating Fordham in a neutral site contest at Loyola Marymount.

    Air Force outscored its opponents, 58-22, over the weekend, led by 12 goals from sophomore Bobby Geiger and 10 scores from junior Alex Churnside. Meanwhile, goalkeeper David Ostrom tallied 28 saves with just 13 goals against.

    Scouting the Falcons...
    The Air Force Falcons, ranked 19th in last week's coaches poll, enter this weekend with a 10-8 overall record and 7-2 mark in the Western Water Polo Association.

    Sophomore Bobby Geiger is the team's leading goal scorer with 29 goals on the season, while junior Alex Churnside leads the Falcons with 44 total points (27 g, 17 a). In addition, senior Tyler Hewko has a team-best 18 assists on the season. In goal, junior David Ostrom has tallied 136 saves on the year.

    Scouting the Gaels...
    The Iona Gaels enter this weekend with an 11-14 overall record. The Gaels went 3-1 in its final homestand of the season, defeating Conn College, Harvard and MIT, while falling to No. 18 Brown.

     

     

    Iona is coached by Brian Kelly, in his 14th season at the helm of the program. Junior Joe Przekota leads the team with 63 goals on the season, while senior captain Patrick St. Cin is second on the team with 42 scores.

    Series Records...
    This weekend, Air Force and Iona will meet for the 10th time in the all-time series, with the Falcons holding a 7-2 advantage against the Gaels. The two teams last met in 2005, with Air Force taking a pair of contests from Iona at the Academy.

    Up Next...
    The Falcons are back in action next weekend, Oct. 25-26, for four more contests. Air Force will take on Santa Clara and Cal Baptist at Santa Clara on Saturday, then head to Davis, Calif., to face UC Davis and Long Beach State on Sunday.
