Falcons' Water Polo Back-To-Back Wins, Losses in Pomona and Claremont

(Oct. 2) - The Falcons' water polo team began this past weekend in Pomona with a 15-6 win over Pomona-Pitzer and an 8-5 win over Redlands. Air Force defeated Pomona in a match earlier this season at the Triton tournament in San Diego. Unfortunately, the Falcons lost their momentum, ending the weekend with back-to-back losses against Claremont and La Verne. Air Force was off the weekend before and had been preparing for Saturday's matches in Pomona and Sunday's competition in Claremont by creating competition situations during practice.

Vs. Pomona-Pitzer: Having already faced Pomona-Pitzer earlier this season, the Falcons went into Saturday's match a very confident team. Air Force outscored Pomona in all four quarters. Game highlights include top scorers C1Cs Derek Argel and Brent Reimer, both with three goals. C1C goalie Charlie Toth had six saves. Other highlights include C1C Chad Simendinger and C4Cs John Whitehill and Scott Butler with two goals, and C2C David Breitenbach and C4C Vincent Urso, each with one goal. Air Force won the match 15-6.

Vs. Redlands: The Falcons were able to maintain their confidence going into the match against Redlands. Air Force won three quarters, losing only the fourth 3-1. C1C Chad Smith had a game scoring high of four goals. Simendinger was able to contribute an additional two and Breitenbach and C1C Wade Grabow each netted one. The falcons defeated Redlands 8-5.

Vs. Claremont and La Verne: Sunday's first match ended with a disappointing 8-7 loss in overtime to Claremont. This is the first time this season Air Force has faced the Staggs who are currently 2-7 in competition. The Falcons also lost Sunday's final match against La Verne 11-9. Air Force defeated La Verne 10-8 earlier this season in San Diego at the Triton tournament.

Upcoming: Air Force has no scheduled matches for this upcoming weekend. The Falcons next scheduled competition is their own Air Force Invitational to be held at the cadet natatorium, the Falcons' home pool. Air Force will be facing UC Davis and California Baptist. Competition begins 9 a.m. Saturday, October 14.
