The Air Force water polo team finished 3-1 at the UC San Diego Triton Tournament, Sept. 6-7, to kick off its regular season. The Falcons split the first day of competition with a 14-3 win over La Verne and a 7-5 loss to no. 6 UC Irvine. Air Force returned Sunday to edge Loyola Marymount, 7-6, and finished the weekend by defeating Redlands, 9-6.
Nine Falcons scored in the Falcons win over La Verne with senior team captain Scott Butler leading the offense with three goals, followed freshman Brian McShane, senior Kirk Reimer, and junior Josh Jewett who each had two. Butler and junior Murphey Morgan led Air Force with two goals each against UC Irvine.
Against Loyola Marymount, Butler led the Falcons again with two goals. Seniors Eric Baber and Micah Peterson, Jewett, McShane, and Morgan each netted one. Senior Kirk Reimer was the top Air Force scorer against Redlands with three goals followed by McShane with two. In goal, senior Brandon Shroyer had 29 saves and 13 steals on the weekend. Morgan led the team in assists with six.
UC San Diego edged both UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara to finish as the only unbeaten team at the 2003 UC San Diego Triton Men's Water Polo Invitational with a perfect record of 4-0.
Upcoming: The Falcons travel to New Jersey this weekend to compete in the Princeton Tournament, Sept. 12-14.
