Falcons' Blue/Silver Water Polo Tournament a Success, Preparing For Triton Tournament
U.S.A.F. ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Falcons' water polo team hosted its Blue and Silver tournament over the Labor Day weekend. The participating teams included a varsity team made up of the upperclassmen, a team of cadet fourth classmen, and an alumni team.
The varsity team dominated the event, defeating the freshmen in three of four quarters, with the cadet fourth classmen winning 3-2 in the third quarter. The alumni team of Jeff Heidmous, class of 1977, Neil McAfferty, '93, Joe Alkire, '94, Mackie Contreras, '97, and Greg Ebert, 2000, lost in all four quarters to the upper classmen. According to head coach Jeff Ehrlich, the C4Cs winning a quarter against the varsity team is a good sign for the future of water polo here at the Academy. The Falcons have been gearing up for the Triton Tournament, which is scheduled to be held this weekend in La Jolla, Calif. "This is a very important weekend for us," said coach Ehrlich. "We'll be able to compete against four teams that are in our conference." The Falcons will be competing against Pomona and Laverne. If they advance they'll also have a chance to compete against UC San Diego and LaJolla. "If we win three out of four games at this tournament, it will be a good sign for us qualifying for the WWPA championships in Hawaii," said Ehrlich. Coach Ehrlich is also excited about his returning starters, C1Cs Derek Argel, Wade Grabow, Brent Reimer, Chad Simendinger, and Charlie Toth. "Our seniors have been looking good. They've been looking forward to the season and have been showing a tremendous amount of leadership by helping out with the younger guys," said Ehrlich.
