Air Force Water Polo Team Ranked 16th in Preseason Poll
Aug. 20, 2008
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The Air Force water polo team will open its season with a national ranking of 16th, as determined by the Top 20 Men’s Varsity preseason poll, released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). California, the defending national champion, was selected as the number one pick with 98 points, edging out 2007 national runner-up USC, which finished second in the balloting with 96 points. Air Force, which finished the 2007 season with a 15-14 overall record and final national ranking of 14, received 26 points in the balloting. Four other teams from the Western Water Polo Association join the Falcons in the preseason top 20, including Loyola Marymount (8), UC Davis (11), UC San Diego (14) and Santa Clara (15). While the Falcons lost their top two scorers from the 2007 season to graduation, this year they will be led by a solid group of veterans, including starting goalkeeper David Ostrom (Jr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) and leading returning scorers Alex Churnside (Jr., Orange, Calif.), Tyler Hewko (Sr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) and Bobby Geiger (So., Buellton, Calif.). Air Force opens the 2008 campaign Sept. 6-7 at the Triton Invitational, hosted by WWPA rival UC San Diego.
