Aug. 19, 2009
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The Air Force water polo team will open the 2009 season ranked 19th in the nation, as determined by the Men's Varsity Top 20 preseason poll, released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). USC, which captured the 2008 championship after putting together an undefeated season, was the unanimous selection for the top spot in the poll. Air Force, which finished the 2008 season with a 17-15 overall record and final national ranking of 20, received 12 points in the balloting. Four other teams from the Western Water Polo Association join the Falcons in the preseason top 20. Loyola Marymount, the 2008 WWPA champion, is ranked sixth, followed by UC San Diego (10), UC Davis (14) and Santa Clara (15). This season, Air Force returns five of seven starters from last season, including starting goalkeeper David Ostrom (Sr., Mission Viejo, Calif.), the 2008 team MVP, as well as the team's top three goal scorers. Junior Bobby Geiger (Buellton, Calif.) led the team with 52 goals in 2008, while seniors Jack Hines (Riverside, Calif.) and Alex Churnside (Orange, Calif.) added 46 and 44 goals, respectively. Churnside was also the team's top point scorer, finishing the season with 77 points (44g, 33a) and is ranked 17th all-time among Air Force's top scorers. The Falcons open the 2009 campaign Sept. 5-6 at the annual Triton Invitational, hosted by WWPA rival UC San Diego. In its first two games of the tournament, Air Force will take on conference foe LMU and top-ranked USC.
