BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - Heading into the 2011 season, the Air Force water polo team is ranked 18th in the Men's Varsity Preseason National Top 20, released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the poll is compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

Three-time defending champion USC garnered 99 points to take first place in the 2011 preseason poll, while 2010 runner-up Cal is ranked second in the poll with 95 points. UCLA (90 points), Stanford (86 points) and Pacific (76 points) round out the top five in the poll.

Air Force, which finished the 2010 season with a 13-18 overall record and final national ranking of 20, received 14 points in the balloting. Four other teams from the Western Water Polo Association join the Falcons in the preseason top 20. Loyola Marymount, the three-time defending WWPA champion, is ranked eighth, followed by UC San Diego (12th), UC Davis (13th) and Santa Clara (14th).

The Falcons open the 2011 campaign Sept. 3-4 at the annual Triton Invitational, hosted by WWPA rival UC San Diego. After beginning the weekend with a contest versus Cal Lutheran, the Falcons will also face the host Tritons as well as conference foes Loyola Marymount and La Verne.
