LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Air Force closed out the 2014 season with a 12-10 win over Santa Clara in the fifth-place game at the Western Water Polo Association Tournament, Sunday, Nov. 23, at the Burns Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, Calif. Air Force, ranked 15th in the nation, was the third-seed in the tournament while the Broncos were the fifth seed. Air Force finished the season with a 15-15 overall record while Santa Clara, ranked 16th in the nation, ended the season 13-16.
Jantz Johnson and Dominic Vicino each scored three goals for the Falcons, who needed a late rally to beat the Broncos. The game see-sawed back and forth and the Broncos had an 8-6 lead with 5:48 left in the third quarter. Air Force then scored four straight goals and took the lead for good. Vicino tied the game with 1:18 left in the third and then Garrett Fisk scored 40 seconds later for a 9-8 lead. Petar Jackovich added a goal with 6:44 left for a two-goal cushion.
Sophomore Robby Stiefel, a first-team all-conference selection, was named to the WWPA all-tournament second team. In the fifth-place game, Stiefel had two goals, four assists and four steals.
In Sunday’s championship game, sixth-ranked UC San Diego won the WWPA Tournament with a 12-6 win over Loyola Marymount. UC San Diego earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
