Nov. 19, 2010
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -
On the first day of competition at the 2010 Western Water Polo Association Championship, the seventh-seeded Air Force water polo team split a pair of contests, defeating 10th-seed Chapman in the opening game, while falling to second-seed UC Davis.
In its first game of the day, Air Force (11-18) had 10 different scorers as the Falcons rolled to a 15-5 victory over Chapman. Air Force took a 5-1 lead after one period and was extended its advantage to 9-2 by the end of the first half. The Panthers never got closer than eight goals the rest of the way, as the Falcons earned a spot in the quarterfinal versus second-seeded UC Davis.
Sophomore Cruz Smithson (Capistrano Beach, Calif.) led the Falcons’ offense with three goals, with Taque Patino (Jr., Rockford, Mich.), Josh Stedman (Fr., Brea, Calif.) and Dillon Fisher (So., Orange, Calif.) adding two goals each and six other players also getting on the board.
Air Force battled UC Davis for the right to advance to Friday’s semifinals, but were never able to take the lead against the Aggies in a 14-10 loss. After trailing 3-2 at the end of the opening period, the Falcons got a score from senior Kurt Wallin (Temecula, Calif.) to tie the game. However, UC Davis closed out the half with three unanswered scores and never relinquished control.
Bobby Geiger (Sr., Buellton, Calif.), Wallin, Smithson and Patino each scored two goals to lead the Falcons’ offense, while Fisher and Stedman each added a goal.
The Falcons continue action at the 2010 Western Water Polo Association Tournament tomorrow at 3:40 p.m. (PT) against the winner of Saturday morning’s contest between Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier.
