USAFA, Colo. - A game-winning score from freshman Bobby Geiger (Buellton, Calif.) with 26 seconds remaining gave fifth-seed Air Force an 11-10 victory over fourth-seed UC San Diego Friday afternoon in the opening round of the WWPA Championship, hosted by the Falcons.
With four first-half scores from senior captain Clark Condict (Irvine, Calif.), Air Force, ranked 16th nationally, rolled to an 8-4 advantage at halftime. However, 14th-ranked UC San Diego came back after the break, outscoring the Falcons 3-1 in the third period. The Tritons twice came within a single goal before a score from Steven Donohoe tied the game at 10-10 with just 47 seconds left in the final period. Hoping to avoid an overtime session against the Tritons, the Falcons got the score from Geiger and held on for the opening round victory.
Condict finished the game with five scores, while sophomore Alex Churnside (Orange, Calif.) added three goals. Geiger notched two scores, including the game-winner, while junior Tyler Hewko (Laguna Hills, Calif.) tallied the final Air Force goal. Leading the Tritons in the contest were Chase Vermilyea and Daniel Garcia with three goals each.
Tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., Air Force will face the winner of tonight's contest between UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz, while UC San Diego will take on the loser of the game.
