Air Force Falls to No. 12 UC Davis in Regular Season Finale

DAVIS, Calif. - Unable to come back from a five-point first period deficit, the Air Force water polo team dropped a 13-7 decision to 12th-ranked UC Davis Monday afternoon in WWPA action. With the loss, the Falcons close out the regular season with a 5-13 overall record and 1-4 mark in the Western Water Polo Association.

After UC Davis took an early 2-0 lead in the opening period, junior Petar Jackovich (New Lenox, Ill.) was the first to get on the board for the Falcons, bringing Air Force within one. However, the Aggies closed out the first quarter with four straight goals to take a 6-1 advantage into the second period.

The second quarter was more evenly played, but Air Force was unable to cut into its deficit. Tallying a goal in the final 10 seconds of the period, UC Davis went into the intermission with a 9-3 lead.

The Aggies led by as many as eight points in the third period, before Robby Stiefel (Fr., San Clemente, Calif.) and Andy Santala (So., Aliso Viejo, Calif.) tallied back-to-back scores for the Falcons to bring the score to 12-6 heading into the final period. Senior Josh Stedman (Brea, Calif.) got on the scoreboard in the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter, but after another UC Davis goal, the score remained at 13-7 for the rest of the contest.

Senior co-captain Max Reilly (Davis, Calif.) was Air Force's leading scorer in his hometown return, tallying two goals, while Stiefel registered a goal, two assists and three steals. The Falcons converted on just one of their six man-up opportunities, while the Aggies were 1-of-3 on the 6-on-5.



With the regular season under wraps, the Falcons will next head to the WWPA Championship, being held Nov. 22-24 in Davis, Calif.
