No. 19 Air Force Drops Two Games on Saturday
Nov. 6, 2010
RIVERSIDE/CLAREMONT, Calif. -
In its final weekend of the regular season, the 19th-ranked Air Force water polo team dropped a pair of games Saturday. The Falcons opened the day with a 14-8 loss to Concordia in a neutral site contest at Cal Baptist, while falling to conference foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 8-7, on the road.
With the losses, the Falcons fall to 9-16 overall on the season and 4-10 in the Western Water Polo Association.
Against Concordia, Air Force fell behind early, trailing 5-1 at the end of the first period. The Eagles extended their advantage to 8-1 before senior Bobby Geiger (Buellton, Calif.) broke the scoring drought for Air Force midway through the second quarter. While the Falcons scored twice more in the period, Concordia was able to take a 10-4 lead into the intermission. Despite staying even with the Eagles in the second half, the Falcons were unable to overcome their first half deficit in the 14-8 loss.
Geiger and classmate Matt Versage (Merced, Calif.) led the Falcons’ offense with three goals each, while Cruz Smithson (So., Capistrano Beach, Calif.) and Kurt Lemmen (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) also scored in the contest.
In its second game of the day, the Falcons were able to grab a 3-1 advantage after one period of action, while still leading 5-3 at the half. However, Claremont went ahead in the third quarter, taking a 7-6 lead, and was able to hold on for the 8-7 victory.
Geiger scored three goals to lead Air Force, while Smithson added two scores. Also finding the back of the net against the Stags were Kurt Wallin (Sr., Temecula, Calif.) and Dillon Fisher (So., Orange, Calif.) with a goal each.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow as they visit conference opponent La Verne in a 12:00 p.m. (PT) contest.
