U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force jumped out to a quick three-goal lead and held off Santa Clara, for a 13-11 victory in a Western Water Polo Association game Sunday, Nov. 5, in Santa Clara, Calif. The Falcons swept the two-game league road trip and closed out the regular season with a 7-13 overall record and a 3-4 mark in league play. The Falcons finished fifth in the WWPA.
Goals by Eric Kawecki, Luke Andres and George Millard gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Santa Clara scored three of the next four goals to cut the Falcon lead to 4-3. The Falcons scored four goals in the final two minutes of the second as Garrett Fisk, Jason Hires, Andres and Edward Smet gave the Falcons an 8-3 lead at the half.
Harrison scored two more in the third as the Falcons had an 11-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. SCU scored three straight goals early in the fourth to cut the Falcon lead to 11-10. Falcon senior Ryan Dorris’ goal at 2:42 ended the Broncos’ scoring streak. SCSU scored again to make the score 12-11 at 2:05, but the Falcons answered again as Riley Thomas’ goal put the Falcons up 13-11 with 1:22 left.
Harrison led the Falcons with three goals. Andres and Thomas each scored two. James Burke made 10 saves and added three steals.
Air Force is now off until the WWPA Championships, Nov. 17-19, at the Canyonview
Aquatic Center in La Jolla, Calif. UC San Diego is the host of the tournament.
