WHITTIER, Calif. - In its final game of the regular season, the 13th-ranked Air Force water polo team picked up a 13-9 road victory over conference foe Whittier. With the victory, the Falcons improve to 16-10 overall on the year and 9-4 in the Western Water Polo Association.
Air Force got out to a strong start against the Poets, taking a 4-1 lead after one period and a 7-3 advantage at the half. The Falcons increased their margin to 10-5 going into the final stanza, and remained in control, despite a comeback attempt from Whittier.
Ten different players found the back of the net for Air Force, led by Petar Jackovich (So., New Lenox, Ill.), Cruz Smithson (Sr., Capistrano Beach, Calif.) and Andrew Hamilton (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) with two scores each. Freshman Ben Rogers (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) recorded a team-best three assists to go along with a goal, while senior goalkeeper Mike Fish (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) registered nine saves and five goals against in just over three periods of action.
Air Force scored on five of its nine 6-on-5 opportunities, while holding Whittier to just 1-of-4 on its man-up chances.
The Falcons host Denver Masters next Sunday, Nov. 11, in an exhibition contest, before heading to the WWPA Championship, Nov. 16-18.
