U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Garrett Fisk and Edward Smet each scored three goals as Air Force defeated Fresno Pacific, 13-11, in a Western Water Polo Association game Friday, Nov. 3, in Fresno, Calif.
The game see-sawed back and forth in the first quarter, with FPU holding a 5-4 lead early in the second. Three straight Falcon goals, one by Neil Reynolds and two by Fisk gave Air Force a 7-5 lead. The Sunbirds answered with three straight to close out the second quarter for an 8-7 lead at the half.
Goals by Fisk and Riley Thomas in the first two minutes of the third quarter put the Falcons up 9-8. After FPU tied the game, Ryan Dorris scored late in the third and Michael Miller found the back of the net early in the fourth for an 11-9 lead. Thomas' second of the game gave the Falcons a 12-10 lead, but the Sunbirds scored with 45 seconds left to cut the Falcon lead to one goal. With 15 seconds remaining, Smet's third of the game, from Fisk, gave the Falcons to 13-11 victory.
Thomas finished the game with two goals, a game-high four assists and two steals. Freshman goalie James Burke had eight saves and an assist.
The Falcons (6-13 overall and 2-4 WWPA) close out the regular season at WWPA rival Santa Clara, Sunday, Nov. 5, at noon PT in Santa Clara, Calif.
