Oct. 27, 2013
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Senior captain Josh Stedman (Brea, Calif.) tallied a team-high four goals, but the 20th-ranked Air Force water polo team was unable to get past WWPA rival Loyola Marymount, dropping a 16-13 contest to the 13th-ranked Lions Sunday at the Burns Center.
The game remained close throughout the opening period, with LMU holding a 4-2 lead before the Falcons tied the score with back-to-back goals in the final minute of the quarter. Air Force went on to take the lead just 20 seconds into the second period with a goal by Petar Jackovich (Jr., New Lenox, Ill.), but the Lions heated up offensively, going on a 6-1 run to head into the intermission with a 10-6 advantage.
After a 6-on-5 goal by Stedman early in the third quarter cut the margin to three goals, Loyola Marymount continued to pull away, scoring the next four goals of the contest. Sophomore Zack Kamai (Irvine, Calif.) stopped the Lions' run, finding the back of the net for the Falcons with 55 seconds on the clock, bringing the score to 14-8.
While Air Force battled back in the final stanza, beginning with consecutive scores from Ben Rogers (So., Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Jackovich, the Falcons were never able to get closer than three the rest of the way.
The Falcons converted on five of their 10 extra-man chances, while also scoring its only penalty shot of the game. Meanwhile, the Lions scored on just two of their six 6-on-5 opportunities.
With his performance this weekend, Stedman moved into 10th place on the Falcons' career scoring list with 241 points, while his 176 career goals are tied for the fifth most in Air Force history.
The Falcons are off next weekend, before closing out the regular season with WWPA contests versus Santa Clara (Nov. 9) and UC Davis (Nov. 11).
