USAFA, Colo. - Playing a pair of games in its own tournament on Saturday, the 13th-ranked Air Force water polo team earned two dominant victories, defeating Fresno Pacific, 16-7, while notching a 19-10 win over No. 19 Cal Baptist.
Against Fresno Pacific, Air Force (13-9 overall) rolled to an early lead, outscoring the Sunbirds 6-0 in the opening period. With two more goals in the first two minutes of the second period, the Falcons took an 8-0 lead before FPU got its first tally of the game with 4:25 on the clock. The Sunbirds added another goal with just over a minute remaining in the quarter, as Air Force took an 8-2 advantage into the intermission.
Scoring on both sides erupted in the third quarter, with each team tallying five goals in the period. Fresno Pacific got as close as five points twice in the latter half of the quarter, but freshmen Eric Bungcag (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Landon Carr (Beaumont, Calif.) each responded with their first career goals to push the Falcons' lead back to six.
Air Force opened the final stanza with three goals in the first minute and a half, while back-up goalkeeper Caleb Guarino (Fr., Diamond Bar, Calif.) recorded four saves and held the Sunbirds scoreless in the period, as the Falcons secured the nine-goal victory.
Junior Andrew Hamilton (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was the leading scorer for Air Force against Fresno Pacific, tallying three goals, while Petar Jackovich (So., New Lenox, Ill.), Jantz Johnson (So., Murrieta, Calif.), Josh Stedman (Jr., Brea, Calif.) and Cruz Smithson (Sr., Capistrano Beach, Calif.) added two goals each. Meanwhile, starting goalkeeper Mike Fish (Sr., Manhattan Beach, Calif.) registered 12 saves in three periods of action.
In their second game on Saturday, the Falcons took a 2-0 lead to start the contest, and after the Lancers scored a man-up goal to cut their deficit to 3-2, Air Force closed out the opening period with two unanswered goals, including a score by Johnson with 12 seconds on the clock.
The Falcons pushed their lead to four goals early in the second quarter with a man-up score from senior Garrett Womack (Redlands, Calif.), but Cal Baptist managed to close the gap back to two goals. With a 7-5 lead midway through the period, Air Force scored three of the last four goals before the intermission, including two in the final minute, to take a 10-6 advantage into the break.
Air Force pulled away in the third period, outscoring the Lancers 6-1. Cal Baptist scored three of the first four goals in the final stanza, including a pair of penalty shots in a span of less than a minute, to cut the margin to 17-10 with 4:28 left to play. However, the Falcons shut out the Lancers down the stretch and added goals from freshmen Kevin Womack (Redlands, Calif.) and Kenny Johnson (Clayton, Calif.) to close out the game.
Jackovich led the Falcons with four goals against Cal Baptist, Smithson added three scores and Stedman, Jantz Johnson, Garrett Womack and Brad Rajchel (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) registered two goals each. Fish had another solid game for Air Force in goal, notching 12 saves in three quarters of action.
The Falcons wrap up the tournament tomorrow, as they host Fresno Pacific at 1:00 p.m.
