Air Force water polo splits two games at Rodeo Tournament
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Air Force water polo team, ranked 13th in the nation, split a pair of games in the final day of the Rodeo Tournament, Sunday, Oct. 26, in Santa Clara, Calif.
In the first game, Air Force (11-14 overall) edged 14th-ranked Santa Clara, 7-6, marking the second time the Falcons have beaten the Broncos in the last seven days. The teams traded goals throughout the game. Air Force scored first and never trailed until the third quarter when the Broncos took a 5-4 lead. Trailing 6-5 in the fourth quarter, the Falcons scored two goals in the final five minutes for the victory. Robby Stiefel tied the game with 4:21 left and Petar Jackovich scored the game-winner with 1:53 remaining. Seven different Falcons scored as Riley Quinlan, Eric Curia, Riley Thomas and Dominic Vicino joined Stiefel and Jackovich in the scoring column. Vicino also had a team-high four steals in the game. Max Benson made 12 saves.
Later in the day, Brown beat Air Force, 18-13, as the Falcons went 2-2 in the tournament and 2-3 on the road trip. Air Force led 4-3 in the first quarter, but Brown scored four straight for a 7-4 lead in the second quarter. Air Force cut the Brown lead to 8-7 in the third quarter, but the Bears again scored four straight for a 12-7 lead. A goal by Ben Rogers with 2:08 remaining in the fourth cut the Brown lead to 16-13, but the Bears scored two late goals to make up the final margin. Rogers scored three goals to lead the Falcons while Jackovich, Stiefel and Jack Empey each scored two.
Air Force plays its final home game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 1, as the Falcons host conference rival Fresno Pacific at 1 p.m. MT at the Cadet Natatorium.
