LA JOLLA, Calif. - Facing conference-leading UC San Diego on the road, the 20th-ranked Air Force water polo team dropped a 15-10 contest to the 12th-ranked host Tritons Friday evening at Canyonview Pool. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 5-10 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Western Water Polo Association.
Air Force got off to a strong start, with senior Andrew Hamilton (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) tallying a pair of goals in the first two minutes to give the Falcons the early lead. However, the Tritons responded, outscoring the Falcons 5-1 over the remainder of the period to take a 5-3 lead into the second quarter.
UCSD increased its lead with the first tally of the second period, and Air Force never got closer than two goals the rest of the way. After being shut out in the third quarter, the Falcons scored half of their goals in the final stanza, but it was not enough to overcome the team's early deficit.
Hamilton led the Falcons' offense, tallying three goals and two assists for the game, while Josh Stedman (Sr., Brea, Calif.) added three goals, all scored on penalty shots in the fourth quarter. Junior Petar Jackovich (New Lenox, Ill.) tallied two goals, while Dominic Vicino (Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Andy Santala (So., Aliso Viejo, Calif.) also found the back of the net for Air Force.
The Falcons close out the weekend with another conference road game, visiting WWPA foe Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Oct. 27, for a 12:00 p.m. (PT) contest.
