No. 16 Air Force Drops Two At SoCal Tournament

Los Angeles, Calif. - In its first day of competition at the SoCal Tournament, the 16th-ranked Air Force water polo team dropped a pair of contests, falling to No. 7 Pacific, 7-5, and No. 3 UC San Diego, 10-7. With the losses, the Falcons fall to 8-9 on the season, 4-2 in the WWPA.
In the first game of the day, Pacific outscored Air Force 3-2 in the opening period, but the Falcons were able to shut out the Tigers in the second quarter, taking a 4-3 lead at the half. However, Pacific rattled off three unanswered scores in the third period to gain the 6-4 advantage. An evenly matched final quarter gave the Tigers the 7-5 victory, their second win over the Falcons this season.
Junior Clark Condict (Irvine, Calif.) led Air Force with a pair of goals against Pacific, while Joey Brewer (So., Clovis, Calif.), Jack Hines (Fr., Riverside, Calif.), Danny Kimmich (Sr., La Jolla, Calif.) and Kevin Williams (So., River Forest, Ill.) all added a score each.
Air Force capped off the day with a match-up versus third-ranked UC San Diego. While the Falcons led 2-1 at the end of the first period, the Tritons came back to grab a 5-4 advantage at the half. UCSD increased its lead to 7-5 in the third quarter before outscoring Air Force 3-2 in the final period en route to the 10-7 win.
Condict again scored a pair of goals for the Falcons, while senior Blake Pickell (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched in two goals. Balancing out the scoring for Air Force were Kimmich, Justin Berry (Jr., Windermere, Fla.) and Kyle Schafer (Sr., Irvine, Calif.).
With a third-place finish in Group D, the Falcons will face off against eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara tomorrow morning at 10:00. The winner of that contest will move into the ninth-place contest at 4:40 p.m. (PT), while the loser will compete for 11th-place at 3:20 p.m.
